The Essential Pot Odds Tutorial for 2023
All you need to know about Pot Odds
Pot Odds is one of the first concepts that you will come across when you start to take Poker seriously, and in this article we will cover everything you need to know about it.
What are Pot Odds?
Pot odds are a way to determine whether it's worth continuing with a hand based on the potential reward (the size of the pot) and the cost of your next action.
It helps you make informed decisions by comparing the potential payout to the investment required.
If you're playing live Poker, this is what you'd have to do to calculate Pot Odds on the spot:
- Determine the size of the pot: Look at the amount of money already in the pot.
- Calculate the cost of your contemplated action: If you're facing a bet, consider the amount you need to call. If you're considering making a bet, determine the amount you plan to bet.
- Divide the pot size by the cost of your action: This gives you the pot odds ratio. For example, if the pot has $100 and your opponent bets $20, the ratio is 100:20 or 5:1.
- Convert the ratio to a percentage: Add the two numbers in the ratio and divide the smaller number by the total. In the previous example, you would divide 1 by (5 + 1) to get approximately 16.67%.

Using the Pot Odds - Example
Imagine you have a flush draw, which means you have four cards of the same suit and need one more card of that suit to complete a flush. The pot currently contains $100, and your opponent bets $20. By quickly glancing at the pot odds provided by Jurojin, you see that the pot odds are 5:1 or approximately 16.67%.
Suppose you know that the odds of completing your flush are roughly 4:1 (20%). In this scenario, the pot odds (16.67%) are higher than the odds of completing your flush (20%). This indicates that calling the $20 bet would be a mathematically profitable decision in the long run.
By using the pot odds feature in Jurojin, you can quickly assess the potential profitability of continuing with a hand. It provides valuable information at a glance, helping you make more informed decisions and ultimately improve your overall poker strategy.
